December 26-31, 2018 friends, appointments and college football in SD, New Year's Eve

Wednesday 12-28
Visited the Perdue's.  Tami and John live in Rapid City.  Their brother Todd and family were visiting from Kentucky.  Todd lived in Alabama while we were there in 2012-13.  Their mom, Judy, from Cresbard, SD was there, too.  I have spent a lot of time with their family over the past 30 years.  Seem like a second family to me.

They had one more guest, Sijie (sagia) that was their exchange student from China several years ago.  She finished college and works in Chicago.  So she was spending Christmas with her SD family.

We watched the movie The Mule with Clint Eastwood.  Then 6 of us played the new card game I just learned.  They picked it up right away.  Sijie was on top of it and figuring everyone’s scores for me.  Fun night.

Thursday 12-27
Blizzard like conditions today.  I had a massage with Sande Lofberg out of her home.  She finally raised her fee from $25 to $30/hour.

Friday 12-28
Since some of the coffee girls were out of town, and the weather was still stormy, just Yvonne and I met at 9:30 instead of 6:30 am for coffee.  It was actually nice to be able to visit, just the two of us.  Yvonne McCann and I were next door neighbors in the early 1990’s and were the ones who started working out together by walking in the mornings.  The regular coffee girls were other women we worked out with.

Next I went out to Patty’s for my hair appointment (on the east side of Ellsworth Air Force Base).  Fun to catch up on each other’s lives with her, too.

beautiful snow after the blizzard
Found my "duck boots" at Scheel’s made by Sperry.  They had to order them for me.  Luckily I will be here long enough and will get them before Ski for Light. But they would have been handy to wear in the snow now.

Next, an eye exam after 2.5 years.  Not a big enough change to get new glasses.  That was a first for me in about 20 years.  Maybe dentistry was harder on me than I remembered.

Saturday 12-29
Pete doesn’t get regular TV stations at his home.  I really wanted to watch the college football games today.  I didn’t want to sit in a bar from 2:00 to 10:00, so we rented a hotel room for the night.  Pete can get good rates through his work.  We ended up making a reservation at the Grand Gateway Hotel last night.  Pete was working, so I checked in early and only missed the beginning of the first game.

It wasn’t a close game, Clemson beat Notre Dame. I was able to get some computer and phone updates and downloads done with the hotel’s wifi.

But the Alabama-Oklahoma Sooners game was much better.  Alabama pulled it off.  ROLL TIDE!!

"tailgate party"
Sunday 12-30
I was invited to join Deb and Denny Stuck for brunch at the Kol restaurant downtown Rapid City.  They had bottomless mimosas and bloody Mary’s for $11.00.  I hesitated, but decided I could handle 2 and still drive home after eating.  Their daughter Jen and fiancé Tom joined us.  They asked if we wanted to go to the movie at the Elks theater downtown at 1:00 to see Bohemian Rhapsody.  I had been wanting to see it, so we all decided to join them.  Well, that meant I wouldn’t be driving until about 3:00.  So another bloody Mary went down just fine.

The theater was only about 3 blocks away.  I can’t believe I didn’t even buy popcorn.  The show was pretty good.  And I think the sound track would be pretty good, too.

Monday 12-31
Rapid City had blizzard conditions this morning with no travel advised and several businesses were closed.  By early afternoon, I drove to the grocery store to pick up some things for an appetizer for New Year’s Eve.

I went to Perdue’s for New Year’s Eve.  There were about about 12 people there.  I knew all but one couple.  And he was a pedodontist that moved here shortly before I left.  We played a couple different games.  I ended up spending the night.  The roads were so icy, and I didn’t want to be on the road with drunk driver’s.
